5 Comparing Peer-to-Peer Architectures and Client–Server Solutions for Product Information Management
Detailed comparison results describing the advantages and disadvantages of client–server solutions in contrast to P2P network architectures are listed in Pförtner (2010). The author defines the priority of each of the criteria for the selected use case in steps of low, medium, and high. This enables both given solutions to be scored to select the most suitable solution for the given use case.
In Pförtner (2010) the P2P solution shows significant advantages over the client–server solution. Of course, this rating can differ if the priorities of the criteria are altered or exchanged. The P2P solution offers low infrastructure investments and high scalability. The client–server solution brings advantages in control over information and security and privacy issues. Another unmentioned fact is that client–server systems have been known for years, and efforts and problematic issues can be easily assessed beforehand. P2P systems are often still under development, and not all issues are clear today.
Some of these assessments correspond directly with the reviews given in Vu et al. (2009) and Lua et al. (2005). Other values are specific to the given use case and cannot be stated in general. For an intended investment decision or selection of architecture, first the list of criteria must be prioritized, then the assessment can be a helpful tool to the decision-maker.
